['məːtʃənt bæȖks; englisch »Handelsbanken«], ursprünglich reine Handelsunternehmen, heute private Spezialbanken v. a. in Großbritannien, die neben Bank- auch Handelsgeschäfte (v. a. Finanzierung von Ex- und Importgeschäften durch Akzeptkredite) betreiben. Zu den Merchant Banks zählen in Großbritannien auch die Accepting Houses (Akzeptbanken, die als Universalbanken für die Industrie dienen) und die Issuing Houses (Emissionsbanken, die eine Garantie für die Unterbringung der Wertpapiere übernehmen). Die Merchant Banks pflegen das Devisen-, Emissions- und Euromarktgeschäft, betreiben langfristige Finanzierungsgeschäfte, nehmen in größerem Umfang Einlagen entgegen und sind im Bereich Vermögensverwaltung sowie bei der Vermittlung und Finanzierung von Unternehmenszusammenschlüssen und -übernahmen (Mergers & Acquisitions) tätig.
